Dickey Betts learned to play the way most guitarists learn to listen—obsessively, alone, and from the best. “We got a lot of blues roots—the old-timey players like Robert Johnson. I like a lot of the old white country players like Jimmie Rodgers and also, I'm a big fan of Merle Haggard. I was into Robert Johnson and Willie McTell and all, but I paid more attention to B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, and Chuck Berry. About seven or eight years ago, I used to listen to Chuck Berry almost exclusively. I guess my strongest roots come from Chuck Berry. I used to wear his records out getting licks off them." Dickey Betts 📷Jan van der Gaag
