If you’re using a black background with white text for your Substack, you might want to consider that over a third of readers will struggle to read it, myself included. The older we get, the more challenging it becomes.

No matter how strong your writing is, some of us may not be able to engage with it comfortably. It would be a shame for your work to miss readers simply because of the way it’s presented.

A stunning number of people can’t read reverse text, which is white on black. The most common reason is astigmatism. Depending on the severity of astigmatism, white text on dark background can cause an effect called halation, which causes the words to become fuzzy and impossibly hard to read. Kind of like if you blurred the text.
