A woman in Melbourne last October drove “over a median strip, two lanes, a footpath and through a fence, before crashing into the [five] unsuspecting children”, killing an 11 year old boy.

She pleaded guilty to careless driving, “a low-level traffic charge that carries a maximum penalty of a $2,442 fine.” Today she was fined $2000: not even the full amount.
