Albania became the first country to appoint an AI system (!) as a government minister

It's called "Diella" (below is its official avatar), and it will be in charge of all public procurement. Here's what you need to know:

Diella means "sun" in Albanian, and the AI system's avatar is a woman in traditional Albanian clothing (below).

The goal of this change is to reduce corruption in Albania.

According to the country's Prime Minister Edi Rama, all decisions on tenders will be taken out of the ministries and given to Diella:

"Albania will be a country where public tenders are 100% incorruptible and where every public fund that goes through the tender procedure is 100% legible.”

Albanians have already been introduced to Diella in the past, as this AI system powers the country’s "e-Albania" platform (where people can access government services online).

It would be interesting to learn more about the human oversight measures implemented and how people can contest a decision taken by this "AI minister."
