She came to say hello.

Southern right whales are famous for this. They approach boats. They watch people. They make contact.

Scientists call it ‘curious behaviour.’ Anyone who’s been in the water with them calls it something else… unforgettable.

This is Puerto Madryn, Argentina, one of the best places on Earth to see them. Every winter they come here to breed, raise calves, and apparently inspect paddleboarders.

Did you know they’re called ‘right’ whales because they were once considered the ‘right’ whales to hunt. Slow, floated when dead, came close to shore.

They almost disappeared. Now they’re coming back. And they’re still coming close.
