And then The Appointment (1981) — rediscovered and restored by the BFI in 2022 — popped up on my Amazon Prime Video screen (I have the excellent BFI Player plug-in). It’s probably best described as a psychological supernatural chiller, as much as a ‘horror’, which immediately makes me think of vampires, werewolves and frenzied chainsaws. For The Appointment (1981) is nothing like that at all. Edward Woodward stars as Ian, a ‘Company Director’ in a beige V-neck jersey, and Jane Merrow as his attractive wife, Diana, in tight Pierre Cardin jeans. And there’s a sulky adolescent daughter, Joanne (Samantha Weysome), who seems to have some sort of unhealthy crush on her father. And they live in a 1920s Mock Tudor house in Gerrard’s Cross.
