The Greek gods were demons dead set on destroying and derailing one of humanity’s great moments of efflorescence and success. Presenting themselves as friends and objects of worship, these demons in fact created cultural norms which sowed the seeds for the ultimate failure of Greek civilization.

Homer in his way is able to intuit that the Greek gods are actually enemies of virtue and of the welfare of the Greeks.

Here's one of my favourite passages from the Iliad: Agamemmnon and Achilles make peace at last, and blame the gods for the rift between them.

This allows them to end their feud, without either of them admitting fault. Belief in the supernatural can be a very useful social tool!
