“Dancing in the Dark” was born out of the desire of Jon Landau, the manager, the man who wanted the guaranteed single that would lock Born in the U.S.A. into superstar territory. And here comes the irony of the demand for a single. The album went on a Thriller-like run, with six more Top 10 singles after “Dancing in the Dark”: “Cover Me” (#7), “Born in the U.S.A.” (#9), “I’m on Fire” (#6), “Glory Days” (#5), “I’m Goin’ Down” (#9), “My Hometown” (#6). One guaranteed song was requested, and instead an entire chain spilled out, as if someone wanted a playlist in advance and ended up with a machine that kept spitting singles.
