Mick Jones also had a very personal reason for wanting this song to move people deeply. Foreigner were recording for Atlantic Records, and Jones had dreamed from the very beginning of his career of being on that label, precisely because of its heritage, all those great R&B figures of the 1950s such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. To him that meant an enormous amount, because it was tied to the way he had grown up inside music. So when he had Ahmet Ertegun, the man at the top of Atlantic, listen to the song in the studio, the moment took on an almost mythic dimension. Jones took him aside and said he had a song he wanted to play for him. The two of them sat in two chairs and he put the track on. Halfway through, he turned and saw tears coming down Ertegun’s face. He described it as a huge personal moment
