“Against All Odds” was born long before it became permanently tied to the film that gave it its final title. Phil Collins already had the material for this song during the Face Value period, when it still existed under the title “How Can You Just Sit There” and had been written inside the same misery that gave birth to the rest of his first solo album. He later recalled to Mojo in 2015 that the piece had been written inside that same darkness, but that it had not drawn him in as much at first as “You Know What I Mean,” and he believed there was room for only one such song on the album.
