There are many cover versions of the song. It has been recorded by Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, The Heptones, Candi Staton, B.J. Thomas, and Fine Young Cannibals, whose 1985 version reached #8 in the United Kingdom. The country version by Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter was first released in 1970 and reached #25 on the country chart. When it was re-released later to support Wanted! The Outlaws, the first country album to go Platinum, it climbed to #2 and earned the couple a Grammy nomination. Much later, Morgan Wade covered it for the deluxe edition of her debut Reckless, adding vocoder answer vocals and a baroque choral arrangement.
