About two minutes into the song, you can hear Mick Jones shout “Split!” For years this could sound as if it were part of the lyrics or some kind of statement related to the subject of the song. Joe Ely, however, explained what really happened. While he and Strummer were shouting the Spanish translations behind Mick Jones’s main vocal, they had sneaked around to the back side of the booth where Jones was singing, without him noticing them. At one point they jumped out and scared him in the middle of recording. Jones turned around irritated and shouted “Split!” They ran back to the vocal booth and the recording never stopped. So a completely ordinary, almost stupid little prank remained inside the song forever.
