Even though the song sounds like pure Alabama essence, there is irony in its heart from the beginning. Lynyrd Skynyrd were from Jacksonville, Florida, not Alabama. They wrote the song out of their own impressions of Alabama and as a tribute to the musicians at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, the legendary studio that became famous in the 1960s and 1970s, when it almost became fashionable for bands to record there
