Musically, “Iris” is one of the best known songs built around a mandolin. The instrument was played by session guitarist Tim Pierce. The song is also in 3/4 waltz time, like Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” and James Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James.” That waltzing meter gives it something constantly floating, something that moves forward without walking in a straight line, almost like emotional swaying.
