Every April Fools’ Day, when we were still kids and about to leave for school, my mother would stop us at the door and say, “Be careful today, don’t let anyone lie to you and make fools of you.” The funny part is that it was probably the only day of the year we heard fewer lies at school than usual. Everyone was suddenly suspicious, overprepared, and too alert to be properly deceived. My mother treated it like a national security warning. Meanwhile, the real prank was that ordinary life did a much better job the other 364 days.
