She lived in a small town in North Carolina, a little outside Asheville, in a place that was not exactly a village and not exactly a town. It had one main church, two gas stations, a drugstore warehouse, a funeral home, and a road that every afternoon gathered dust and gossip. She grew up there. She stayed there. She grew old there so completely that in the end she no longer needed to introduce herself. She was one of the landscapes.
