The song was credited to Leiber, Stoller, and Ben E. King. Charles Albert Tindley, the man who had written the original hymn, was left off the credits because his work was considered sufficiently transformed that it no longer needed to be acknowledged. And this was not the first time something like that had happened to a song that began with Tindley. He had also written “I’ll Overcome Someday,” which was later transformed into “We Shall Overcome.”
