He took it from the nail, shook the dust from it, and put it on over a shirt bought second hand at a thrift place. The shirt was a little short in the sleeves and loose at the collar. He did not tuck it in properly. He left his shoelaces untied. He was not doing that for style. He simply no longer had inside him the discipline for the final adjustment. That small gesture that makes a man still look connected to the world.
