The structure gives this so much heart. Moving between “You’re four months old, darling”, the hospital updates, the phone call about the hemorrhagic stroke, and then ending with “to what I’m still hoping / isn’t goodbye” makes the whole piece feel intimate and painfully real. It reads like memory, family, and shock all colliding at once.

And those small details do a lot. “The song was ‘Children Song,’”“my bare feet cold against the tile,”“I gathered my liquefied self from the floor”. That’s the kind of writing that makes grief feel human instead of abstract. Tender, raw, and full of love.
