The app for independent voices

The video was the decisive engine of the explosion. It was the one where a drawn man from inside comic panels reaches out his hand and pulls the woman into his world. It was created by Michael Patterson and his wife Candace Reckinger, who would later also work on videos such as “Opposites Attract,” “Luka,” and “Impulsive.” Patterson explained that this work began through his own animated film Commuter, which had won the student academy award in 1981 and used the same visual logic. He himself directed the animation and drew all the material for the clip, and, as he said, the work is often credited with bringing experimental animation into the mainstream. The video was inspired by the transformation scene in the 1980 science-fiction film Altered States. Every scene was first shot live, then projected onto paper, and then traced frame by frame. The additional information also says that more than 2,000 hand-drawn frames were needed and about 16 weeks of work.
