“Somebody That I Used To Know” is the song through which Gotye, that is, the Belgian born Wally De Backer, moved from the reputation of a distinctive indie songwriter into a global phenomenon. De Backer had moved with his family to Australia at the age of just two and had been releasing music there since 2001, but his first major recognition had come with his second album, Like Drawing Blood, which was voted the top album of 2006 by the listeners of Triple J. “Somebody That I Used To Know” was the second single from his third album, Making Mirrors, which was released in the summer of 2011 and reached No. 1 in Australia. From that point on, however, the song broke completely out of the limits of an Australian success and became one of the most recognizable global singles of the 2010s.
