“Somebody That I Used To Know” also carries a very substantial musical borrowing. Its basic guitar idea is built on a sample from the guitar break of “Seville” by Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfá. Bonfá had died in 2001, but Gotye acted generously and gave him songwriting credit. According to Australia’s Courier Mail, Bonfá influenced not only the musical opening of the song but also its first lyrical steps, while there was also an early agreement giving 45% of the song’s royalties to the Brazilian musician’s estate.
