Dennis Coffey added guitar to the album and brought in another Funk Brother, Bob Babbitt, to play bass, while Mike Theodore handled keyboards. Coffey himself has said that Rodriguez was so shy that they had to put him in the studio alone, record four songs with him isolated, and then build the band around those takes. Only afterward did he begin to feel comfortable enough to record with the other musicians.
