The song had already lived a first life before the version that remained permanently fixed in public memory. Sunnyboys had recorded an initial version of it for their early independent EP in 1980, at a stage when the band was still building its name through a rawer and more immediate energy. That first release sold quickly and helped spread the name of Sunnyboys in a decisive way, but the later re-recorded version is the one that remained as the definitive one. That was the version included on their self-titled debut album in 1981.
