Massachusetts Women’s History

Happy Women’s History Month!

We take this opportunity to honor a ground breaking and much loved book that had its inception in 1969 when a group of women met at Emmanuel College to attend a workshop entitled “Women and Their Bodies.”  This eventually led to the formation of the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective and the publication in 1970 of the book Women And Their Bodies, A Course. This book was renamed in 1972 to Our Bodies Our Selves.

As Carol Tavris says, in her own enduringly relevant 1992  book, The Mismeasure Of Woman:

But our society continues to fight a war over the proper place of women, and the battleground is the female body.

Only now we aren’t just fighting over the proper place of women, we are fighting for the ability to claim and name battleground itself: the female body.
