Harvested some kale leaves from our kale garden to add to our dinner pot of red beans soup this evening.

We have been growing kale for over a year, and this ~alongside other key crops that survive well with water scarcity~ has supported our family’s nutritional intake.

For us, growing some of what we eat is a conscious practice of survivalism in Jamaica. There is much struggle at present in our groundwork phases, as we lack the infrastructure and tools needed to sustain a thriving family farm with a wide variety of crops.

🌱

As self-learning subsistence farmers, we are learning through experience which crops can survive, as we gradually build toward cycles where we have the time, energy, and resources to sustain a homestead lifestyle at the quality we desire in Jamaica.
