This is from my copy of James Salter’s “The Hunters,” perhaps the best war novel I’ve ever read. Salter based the novel on his real-life experiences as a pilot in Korea.
This kind of longing sets men apart from women, entirely and decisively. Jorge Luis Borges used to expressed similar sentiments, and went to his grave lamenting that he never fought in war.
