Werner Lorant was the definition of the Bundesliga zampano. A German word of Italian origin that describes a person who wants to impress through an exaggerated, boastful demeanor or creates the impression of being able to make the impossible possible. Head coaches with that label often walk a fine line between the theatrical and guiding their clubs to the impossible.
Lorant was all that and more for 1860 Munich in the 1990s. Today this art form is almost lost, with two exceptions. Christian Streich in Freiburg and Steffen Baumgart in Köln can also be described as zampanos, and they make the league better as a result.
