There’s also no escaping conflict in the doctor-patient relationship. Emotions can run high in my office. There are tears, there is fear, and there is anger. I never like it when a patient is upset with me, but I’m trained to approach it in a way that is therapeutic and de-escalates the intensity. It’s part of my job. But this new era feels different. This is an explicit invitation to violence, to turn what should be a healing relationship between doctors and patients into one marred by distrust and animosity.
