Big Dreams, Bigger God

I see a lot of talk on here about the beauty of living a slow life. And, while I’m in full support of the joy and peace that’s found in modest and quaint living, I also think it’s important to provide equal encouragement for the big dreamers.

The ones who’ve always had their sights set on careers, people, places, and things that’ve felt too intimidating, unachievable, or out-of-reach for a person like themselves.

The Christian life doesn’t need to be universally depicted as just one thing, nor do your occupation, lifestyle, financial situation, and personal preferences need to conform to those of others in your community/church for it to count as faithful to God.

Just as Christ cares about your discipleship, righteousness, and faithfulness, He also cares about the little joys that make you smile. The things that make you laugh. The dreams that make your heart sing. And, the ambitions you’ve fantasized about since you were a small child.

So, if you find yourself scared of dreaming big because you’re worried that those prayers exist far beyond God’s capacity, this message is for you: He gave you those aspirations for a reason, and you shouldn’t feel ashamed of working towards them.

Start that business.

Write that book.

Make that album.

Move to a new city.

Make new friends.

Volunteer when given the chance.

Go on that international mission trip and preach to those who’ve never heard the gospel before.

Live off-the-grid, in a high-rise, on a boat, or somewhere else.

Adopt a dog, or two, or even three!

Hop on a plane, backpack through Europe, take a road trip with some friends, or travel by some other means.

Don’t stifle yourself because of your own insecurities, doubts, fears, or peer pressure from those around you. Instead, let God give you the strength you need to chase your dreams, and see where He takes you along the way.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” (Proverbs 16:3 NIV)
