This was such a thoughtful and helpful overview. It really clarified how the “dictation” view of Scripture grew out of the Reformation era and why so many still hold that assumption today.
I’ve often wondered how Moses could have written about events that happened long before his time such asz Creation, the Flood, the lives of the patriarchs. One way to see it is that God revealed those truths to him directly through the Holy Spirit, while also guiding him as he drew from ancient oral and written traditions passed down through the generations.
Rather than pure dictation, it seems more likely to me that it was divine revelation working through a human mind and pen. God speaking through Moses, not around him. The result isn’t just a historical record, but a living testimony that draws us into relationship with the same God who revealed Himself then and still speaks through His Word today.
