The Trump Administration’s new AI Action Plan takes important steps—tightening export controls, building alliances, investing in chips and compute infrastructure—that align closely with several recommendations I submitted during its development.
But two accelerators remain underpowered: 1️⃣ Giving U.S. universities the compute resources they need to keep America at the forefront of AI innovation. 2️⃣ Mounting a global strategy to outcompete authoritarian AI models, especially in emerging and developing economies.
In this Mind the Gap post, I highlight how universities built America’s AI edge, why compute power is now the key to sustaining it, and why the U.S. needs a “Digital Marshall Plan” to ensure AI advances freedom—not authoritarian control—around the world.
