My favorite time of the day for outdoor photography is the morning blue hour. This is the brief twilight period when the sun is still below the horizon, creating soft, cool, blue light across the sky.

I’ve included a photo taken of Cade’s Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park before sunrise. This is a lush valley, surrounded by mountains. On a good day, you might catch a glimpse of black bears or white-tailed deer. What’s cool, there’s an 11-mile one-way loop that puts you in contact with 19th-century pioneer homesteads.
