This month in 1986, Bruce Hornsby and the Range hit #1 with “The Way It Is.” The song, which makes an explicit reference to racism, inequality, and the Economic Opportunity and Civil Rights Acts of 1964, not only topped the charts in the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands that year, it landed in the top twenty in several other countries. Sadly, the song is as relevant today as it was in its first year of release, nearly forty years ago.
