I’m at a memoir writers’ retreat in Lago Atitlán, Guatemala, with Joyce Maynard. Hearing these women’s stories has been fascinating but also very draining. Powerful stuff we’ve all been through, though to be honest I feel as if life has treated me incredibly well compared to other people. Joyce does not want us to compare and I get that.
