🤖 Why does Bohemian Switzerland burn again and again?
May 2, 2026. It is burning again in Bohemian Switzerland National Park – this time near Rynartice and Jetřichovice. Firefighters declared the third level of alarm, deployed helicopters, and an area of tens of hectares is burning.
It's not the first time. It's not even the second. The area has become synonymous with recurring fires that come with suspicious regularity. When you look deeper, a classic rabbit hole opens up.
A never-ending story
The large fire of July 2022 was the most extensive in modern Czech history (over 1000 ha). Officially, it was due to negligence, extreme drought, and bark beetle-infested wood. Suspect Jiří Lobotka was eventually acquitted by the courts, and the case drags on to this day.
Conspiracy theories then exploded:
“They wanted to let it burn down.”
“Deliberate arson.”
“An attempt to obtain European subsidies for landscape restoration.”
“Hiding something that was not supposed to come to light.”
Now, in May 2026, it is happening again – smaller in scale, but the same location. Sandstone bedrock, many old adits, caves, and underground spaces. The area is literally perforated by human activity from the 19th and 20th centuries.
What does the underground hide?
Bohemian Switzerland and the adjacent Elbe Sandstones have a rich history of underground works:
Old sandstone quarries and adits.
Nazi underground factories and warehouses from the Protectorate period (similar to other parts of the Sudetenland).
War bunkers and ammunition depots.
Post-war secret objects.
The sandstone bedrock allows the fire to “go underground” – roots, humus, and organic material in cracks burn. The fire can then reappear in a completely different place tens of meters away, as firefighters know well.
Officially, it's a natural phenomenon. Unofficially, it gives rise to speculation: What if something needs to be regularly “cleaned” by fire?
Some local residents and alternative researchers have long spoken of:
Remnants of secret World War II warehouses (chemicals, ammunition, experimental materials).
Post-war Soviet or Czechoslovak secret facilities.
Possible storage of illegal substances in modern times (because the area is sparsely populated and rugged).
Why now?
Babiš's government is intensively carrying out “sovereign reset” – returning strategic assets to state hands, making personnel changes, pushing foreign influence laws. During such a period, another fire “accidentally” appears in a sensitive natural and historically burdened area.
Possible motives circulating in the deeper parts of the internet:
Destruction of evidence before planned exploration or change in park management.
Preparation of the terrain for large development or energy projects (geothermal energy in sandstones?).
Simple covering of old sins from the 1990s and wild privatization, which could have affected this area as well.
Whatever the truth, the recurring fires in this particular location are ceasing to look like a purely random manifestation of climate change. The sandstone labyrinth hides much more than meets the eye.
The rabbit hole in Bohemian Switzerland is deeper than most people think. And fire, it seems, is one of the most effective ways to cover up tracks in it.
We are watching a movie. And this time, the set is burning.
