“Zorba the Greek” is one of those rare films that feels like an excellent adaptation of the spirit of the book, not just the story. Kazantzakis wrote something wild, alive, and deeply human, and the movie transmits that energy beautifully.
For me, this book was one of the works that changed me for the better. In my early 20s, it was an influence that gave me the epiphany to “cut the rope” and start freeing myself from self-imposed fears, especially the fear of judgment.
It reminded me that a little madness is sometimes necessary. I am not talking about recklessness here, but the courage to stop living only inside the limits you inherited, imagined, or accepted too quietly.
I return to Zorba again and again because it still feels like a call back to life, to freedom, movement, joy, risk, and the kind of courage that makes you feel fully awake.
