I like to hear from subscribers and I’ve had feedback that I say “attempting unprecedented third term” too often talking about Gov. Walz. Let me explain: I have seen a DFL governor attempt a third term when Gov. Rudy Perpich ran in 1990. My father, AP Reporter Gene Lahammer, covered the race closely. Perpich lost to a Republican Party that saw its candidate John Grunseth swim naked with teen girls in his pool and step down weeks before the election. As I recounted on our Almanac 40th anniversary show, I answered the phone at home when Grunseth called our house late the campaign to give my dad the scoop. Republican Arne Carlson stepped in and went on to win two terms, followed by Independent Gov. Jesse Ventura and two terms of Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty. So, Perpich’s loss led to a 20-year drought in the governor’s office for Democrats.
