This reflective appreciation of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is absorbing throughout. It reignites some of the original helpless fascination I felt more than 30 years ago (good God, nearly 40) when I first read the book in huge, exhilarated gulps in my college dorm room. And Rowson's framing of Pirsig as a prophet of what we now refer to as the modern metacrisis is not only spot-on but helpfully enriching to an understanding and appreciation of the book's nature, scope, and significance.
