A man at the library counter asked if he could get a card without an address.

The clerk looked up. “No fixed address?”

He shook his head. “Not right now.”

She typed for a moment, then said, “Then we’ll use the library’s.”

He stared at the card and smiled from cheek to cheek.

Bureaucracy often locks the doors to a better life.

But libraries always leave them open.
