Could Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears cook up a blockbuster?
Inside Monday’s 4 Downs column, I broke down a handful of potential draft night trade pressure points to watch.
Chicago Bears go get a building block safety - This one is, admittedly, wild.
General manager Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears seem to be fast-tracking building towards a Super Bowl in Chicago around ascending star quarterback Caleb Williams and a horde of homegrown offensive skill players. And, while the Bears inked star safety Coby Bryant early in free agency, Chicago also lost veteran safeties Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard.
This was a defense that survived on creating the most takeaways in the league last season, and has an eye on building sustainability on that side of the ball this offseason.
Bryant’s arrival addresses one safety spot. The question is what lines up alongside him.
Given how close the Bears are towards becoming theteam to beat in the NFC, what if Caleb Downs is on the board when the Chiefs are on the clock at No. 9 overall?
Kansas City seems to be signaling that the 2026 season might be a soft rebuild or reload as Patrick Mahomes makes his way back from a torn ACL suffered back in late December. If Downs is there, Poles should at least pick up the phone to float the idea of sending Kansas City pick No. 25 overall, pick No. 60 overall, and a first-round and third-round pick in 2027, in exchange for pick No. 9 and a 2027 fourth-round selection.
Downs is viewed as a generationally-impactful safety prospect with range, physicality, and ball skills. Chicago gets a foundational piece for a defensive overhaul, and the Chiefs stockpile an additional 2027 first-round choice in a 2027 draft that is viewed as being significantly deeper and more talented than this year’s. Bold, but plausible.
