🎬 New Essay: On Directing

If you go by the myth, we hold cameras like weapons, win statues, and orchestrate chaos with absolute control. The image is clean. Confident. Cinematic.

The reality is quieter.

It’s budget gaps and rewrites. It’s calming actors and translating notes. It’s shaving half a second off a cut so a line finally lands. It’s answering questions all day while privately asking one: does this scene make me feel something?

My new essay is about what directing really is, after years of film school, features, TV series, and working across many countries.

What I’ve learned is this: directing isn’t about control. It’s about alignment. Holding the emotional center while everything around you shifts.

Confidence didn’t arrive as a breakthrough moment. It arrived slowly, disguised as experience.

If you’re building something creative, leading teams, or trying to protect a fragile vision inside a complex system, this might resonate.

And thank you for being here, for reading, for following along. As we step into the Year of the Fire Horse, may we move with courage, stamina, and a little bit of wild grace.
