EDIT: I slept on it and the premise that no music could have blown anyone's mind since Kraftwerk kind if pisses me off actually. What about the entire advent of hip hop?!

Another reason people are quick to jump on the “all new music is derivative slop” train. In some ways, they aren't entirely wrong.* There's no way to have that true sense of newness anymore. Even if the sound is truly something we haven't yet experienced, we're all far too plugged in now to have that kind of revelatory experience.

(The article I'm quoting isn't about this topic, but this is still interesting/sad.)

*I'll still keep fighting to prove them wrong every day, though.

I think that all of us are so exposed to every possible influence in the world nowadays that it’s essentially impossible to experience something as new as the Beatles would have sounded to a Kidderminster housewife in 1966. For a teenager in the 1960s, to listen to Revolver would have been as if to taste sugar for the first time; in 2026, our diet is only sugar, and from an early age.
