In 1973 Sam Peckinpah released “Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid” starring James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson. Bob Dylan wrote the music, including “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and released a soundtrack album.
During the sessions Dylan recorded an unfinished sketch called “Rock Me Mama” which was never released.
The song made it into a bootleg recording; in 2003 Old Crow Medicine Show leader Ketch Secor finished it under the name “Wagon Wheel” and released it on the band’s debut album “O.C.M.S.”
