One thing that always struck me about hyper religious church types was how they often used modesty as a cover for ugliness. I never liked how they dressed. But in Europe, especially in Italy, you find modesty and beauty together. Catholic culture has a respect for beauty that I don’t think many others do perhaps because they suffer least from the bad idea that the material is somehow irrelevant compared to the spiritual. Despite the very central idea of Christianity that it was the spirit made flesh, material, that saved us, and saves us again every week we with the mystery of the Eucharist.
