They push hormonal birth control on women immediately after giving birth. Birth control pills deplete the body of essential nutrients, including B vitamins, zinc, magnesium, selenium, and Vitamin C — as such, they decrease milk supply.
Birth control pills also increase carb and sugar cravings, and higher consumption of processed foods, refined sugars, and refined flour will also deplete the body of essential nutrients and disrupt the gut. This will also slow down losing the baby weight, which can cause some women to try to restrict calories (a terrible idea when breastfeeding). Wheat products in Canada and the US are also “fortified” with synthetic vitamins made of petroleum byproducts (and other gross stuff), which further disrupt the gut and absorption of natural vitamins from whole foods. And then you get to glyphosate.
Mothers on birth control are significantly more likely to experience postpartum depression, which may lead to SSRIs or other psychiatric drugs being prescribed — which can cause increased carb and sugar cravings and further deplete nutrients and milk supply. (SSRIs deplete calcium!! Kind of important for milk).
Refined sugar depletes B vitamins, magnesium, calcium, and prevents Vitamin C absorption.
Women who are under-supported postpartum might also end up relying on quick and easy foods because no one is around to cook for them. You really need to eat a diet full of healthy whole foods postpartum, homemade broths and soups, good quality red meat, lots of eggs etc.
Alternative to hormonal birth control — condoms (obviously), myrrh essential oil (put in coconut oil and oil pull before and the morning after intercourse, this will prevent implantation while also doing wonders for your oral health!) Myrrh essential oil is also great postpartum because it causes uterine contractions and speeds up healing, so you recover faster. Purchase pre-diluted in jojoba oil and rub over your abdomen and lower back with some DMSO in aloe for extra absorption.
Herbs / foods to increase milk supply — milk thistle, moringa leaf powder, grass-fed beef liver, fenugreek, good quality eggs (EAT THE YOLKS!!), soaked chia seeds (I make pudding with raw milk and maple syrup and it’s so good), homemade broth with tons of garlic and ginger etc.
Postpartum recovery and lactation porridge — millet, whole milk (raw milk is better), goji berries, red dates, real maple syrup. Seriously, this stuff is magic.
Anyway, I’ve been breastfeeding for nearly 4.5 years (I breastfed my first while pregnant with my second, had zero fatigue or morning sickness or any complications whatsoever), and I lost all my baby weight within 10 months with just moderate exercise.
