We condition men not to care, and act shocked when they don’t. At the same time, we condition women to do the emotional and care labour for them, relieving men of both responsibility and incentive to improve. This leads to a vicious cycle in which emotional expression, including empathy, continues to be treated as a gendered characteristic.
