In the musicians I’ve chatted with so far this year, a common theme I noticed is that we explore artistically outside of our comfort zone regardless of skill/experience impediments. The “magic” seems to happen because more than anything, finding and expressing an authentic voice/story seems to be the top priority.
This recording is an Oscar Peterson arrangement of My One and Only Love. I remember 7 years ago working on this piece, struggling to find the beat, have fun with the ornamentation, and voice the melody on top. Would I play this completely differently today? Yes! But it I’m so proud of working on something well outside of my comfort and skill zone.
