A few minutes ago, I watched a video snippet of an MP in New Zealand who shutdown their parliament meeting in protest of a bill they want to pass that would upend 200 years of precedent between the Maori people and the crown. The haka they performed shot through me and I felt every single thing through their storytelling. I don't know their language, but I felt everything they were saying. The power they were able to wield through their voices is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Our stories are the most powerful thing we have.
I fully believe with my whole being that storytelling, through writing or any other medium really, is a small sort of rebellion. How else do we tell the world we're here? We can tell the truth in our stories and it doesn't always have to be truth that's imperative to the moment, but a truth nonetheless, fiction and nonfiction alike. I don't see them as being at odds, but as compliments to one another.
My favorite thing about us humans is our ability to connect with one another through our stories, even if we don't always understand the language.
Thank you for this today, it is a much needed reminder of who we can be. Also, I'm ready to have a "what's my job" party!! Xoxo
