Among other things, The Metropolitan watched ‘Speed’ last month, the ne plus ultra of high concept, low brow ‘90s action movies.

The casting of Dennis Hopper, the enfant terrible and prime mover of New Hollywood, as a cackling one-note villain, emphasises that this is very much not a New Hollywood movie. It is slick, propulsive, precision-made entertainment.
